For an individual security officer, the requirements include being at least 18 years old, being a South African citizen or permanent resident, completing the required training through an accredited training provider, and meeting PSiRA’s suitability requirements, including those relating to specified criminal offences. Former members of official military, police, security or intelligence services may also need to provide a clearance certificate.
For a security company, the requirements go further. The business must be appropriately registered, and its directors, members, partners, trustees and managers must themselves be registered security service providers at the required level — PSiRA currently specifies at least Grade B for these roles.
The application process also includes requirements relating to company registration, tax and employment compliance, operating premises, a business plan and evidence that the company has the capacity to operate.
