Overview

Turning smartphones into a safety platform

In South Africa, access to private emergency response has traditionally been limited to a small percentage of the population. While safety services remain scarce, smartphones are nearly universal.

Samsung identified a clear opportunity: use the device already in people’s hands to bridge the gap between digital protection and physical safety.

By embedding AURA’s real-time emergency response directly into Galaxy devices, Samsung transformed the smartphone from a communication tool into a life-saving service—reinforcing its role as a brand that delivers meaningful, real-world value.

“We are giving back in the form of providing services to you that are meaningful at your most vulnerable point of need. And that’s where AURA came into play”

Challenge

The barriers to scaling safety

  • Safety as a privilege: Fewer than 13% of South Africans have access to private emergency response. Samsung wanted to help shift safety from a luxury to a standard.
  • Digital vs physical protection: While strong in device and data security, Samsung lacked a way to extend protection into users’ everyday lives.
  • Trust and adoption: Many users—particularly in lower-income segments—are sceptical of unfamiliar digital services or emergency apps.
  • Seamless integration: Delivering emergency response required nationwide coverage, operational reliability, and deep technical integration.
  • Retail alignment: SOS+ needed to enhance, not compete with, existing retail security offerings.

Solution

Embedded emergency response, built for scale

Samsung partnered with AURA to integrate a real-time private emergency response service into selected Galaxy A-series devices as a proof of concept.

SOS+ offers:

  • A toll-free emergency line
  • Automatic location sharing
  • Live responder tracking
  • Simple registration via the Samsung Members app

By leveraging AURA’s API-driven infrastructure, Samsung embedded emergency response directly into the Galaxy user journey—bypassing the “app graveyard” entirely. With AURA handling the operational and technical complexity behind the scenes, Samsung was able to move quickly while focusing on a seamless user experience and strong brand integration.

Launching first on the Galaxy A-series allowed Samsung to refine and battle-test the end-to-end response chain in a controlled environment, creating a proven foundation for expansion across the wider Galaxy ecosystem.

“The vision is to get to a point where you’re part of the Samsung services… they [AURA] take away the hassles of technical development.”

Results

From pilot to platform-level impact

Samsung Mobile proved that embedded emergency response can drive consumer trust, retail adoption, and a clear path to platform-level scale.

  • Strong consumer engagement: The SOS+ launch campaign surpassed 16 million views across TV and digital channels. Consumer testing and mystery-shopping confirmed strong trust in Samsung providing real-world safety support.
  • Retail partner momentum: Retail partners—initially cautious due to overlap with existing security add-ons—quickly recognised SOS+ as a value-add. Many proactively explored point-of-sale integration.
  • Product & market learnings: Early rollout insights showed that adoption barriers in lower-income segments were driven more by awareness and belief systems than by price or connectivity—informing improved onboarding and messaging.
  • A clear path to scale: Samsung is now expanding SOS+ to flagship devices, signalling confidence in the model and a roadmap toward national and future global rollout.
Strengthening brand trust

By embedding physical safety into everyday devices, Samsung reinforced its positioning as a responsible innovator at a time when personal safety is a top consumer priority.
